Read: Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

PLOT:

A mysterious island. An abandoned orphanage. And a strange collection of very curious photographs. It all waits to be discovered in Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, an unforgettable novel that mixes fiction and photography in a thrilling reading experience. As our story opens, a horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children who once lived here—one of whom was his own grandfather—were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a desolate island for good reason. And somehow—impossible though it seems—they may still be alive.

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar is a fascinating albeit morbid read. I daresay morbid in a sense that this is clearly not your average young adult novel. Mentions of incest, adultery plus the occasional heavy drinking might prompt for an explanation. Not to mention the preserved hearts and mangled bodies.

But I assure you, this book is not of the horror genre. It's a mystery. Who is Miss Peregrine? What happened or what happens in the island? It's a whole lot of secrets waiting to be discovered.

Make believe that is truly believable.  The photographs adds the distinct feel that the story really does transcend fantasy and reality. Bad for the imagination but great for the story. A joyful ride of mystery, romance and art rolled in to one.

Miss Peregrine's demonstrated the sad quality of humans, we are afraid of the unknown. We dismiss those who are different, sometimes as a laughing stocks and regrettably as evils which we do not need. What makes people different? What makes someone peculiar?
